An airstrike struck a school in Loikaw Township, in Myanmar's Kayah state, on Saturday, killing three children and injuring five others, the UN Children's Fund, UNICEF, said, according to UN News.

The educational center had been sheltering displaced families from the fighting when it was hit, part of an ongoing civil war that began with a coup in 2021. Further airstrikes were reported in Rakhine state over the same weekend, including one that struck a temporary health care facility, reportedly killing a newborn baby and several health care workers.

UNICEF described the reports as a stark reminder that children are bearing the brunt of the conflict in Myanmar, saying young people are being killed and injured in places that should keep them safe. The agency appealed to all parties to the conflict to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law and take every necessary measure to protect children.

UNICEF, reporting through UN News, did not say who carried out either strike.
